Quick Tips for Writing a Letter to the Editor:

Tips: Be personal, be concise, and request specific action.

Letters written by readers, which appear on your local newspaper's editorial page, are one of the best-read features in the paper. Letters to the Editor offer readers an opportunity to know who supports a certain issue or cause. Don't underestimate the value of your own name; you may not be well-known, but you have friends and acquaintances, family and coworkers, all of whom listen more closely to people they know and trust than they do to strangers. And they'll be more convinced of your own conviction because you are willing to say it publicly.

  • Keep letters short.
  • Be sure to include a phone number where you can be reached during the day so that the newspaper may confirm that you wrote the letter.
  • Many newspapers have adopted a policy of limiting letters to one per reader every 90 days or so. As frustrating as that can be, we need to respect their need to publish as many different writers as possible. Anyway, it's a great way to get more of our friends and supporters involved in writing their own letters!
  • If you are calling about a particular piece of legislation, identify it by name or number. If you are responding to an article or another letter, be sure to reference it by title, author, and date it appeared in the paper.
