Colposcopy and Cryotherapy
Women who have experienced cellular changes detected on a Pap test may need another examination that is known as Colposcopy. Depending upon the results of this examination, a biopsy may be needed. Colposcopy is a procedure used to examine the cells of the vaginal walls and cervix for abnormal patterns. It may also be done to examine external shores, such as genital warts, or other abnormalities. This examination, which is done between menstrual periods, takes from 10-30 minutes. There is usually little to no discomfort during the exam. If indicated by the biopsy, Cryotherapy may be necessary. Cryotherapy (freezing) removes the abnormal cells from the cervix.
Many of our health centers provide Colposcopy and Cryotherapy services as follow-up care. To make an appointment or for more information, please contact one of our local health centers directly or call 1-800-230-PLAN to be connected to the Planned Parenthood health center nearest you.
