Annual Exam

Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio offers routine annual exams to all our female clients. The exam includes a complete physical assessment, pelvic exam, pap test, and breast exam. It is recommended that every woman who is sexually active or 18 years of age and older receive a pelvic exam and breast exam once a year or as directed by your physician or clinician to make sure the reproductive organs are normal and healthy.

Yearly exams can lead to early detection of cancers of the breast and cervix when they may be more curable. In addition, other screening tests such as cholesterol and diabetes screening are available. These test results can help you prevent future illness.

An annual exam includes:

Medical history review with a clinician
Blood pressure and weight check
Breast exam
Pelvic exam
Chlamydia / Gonorrhea screening (as necessary)
Pap test

During a pelvic exam, a clinician will:

  • Look at your vagina for signs of infection
  • Take a sample of cells from your cervix for a Pap test
  • Do testing for gonorrhea and/or chlamydia if you need them
  • Feel your uterus and ovaries to make sure they are normal

Please note that you are not automatically tested for HIV or most other sexually transmitted infections during a routine exam. If you would like to be tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, or other sexually transmitted inffections not listed here, please ask your clinician.
