Our History

For almost a century, Planned Parenthood has worked to make sure all people have the information and means to decided freely and responsibly whether and when to have children.

Omaha Beginnings

In 1935, prominent Omaha families started the Maternal Health League to respond to appeals from mothers who were distressed at the prospect of bringing more babies into the world when they themselves lacked health and help. In 1947 the League became Planned Parenthood Committee of Omaha.

Council Bluffs Beginnings

In 1971, Council Bluffs residents meet with Omaha Planned Parenthood staff to organize the Family Planning of Missouri Valley. In 1977 the groups merged to create Planned Parenthood of Omaha-Council Bluffs.

Lincoln Beginnings

In 1970, federal funds allowed the YWCA and Lincoln Action Program to provide services to low-income women through the Family Planning Center. In 1974, the center becomes Planned Parenthood of Lincoln.

Planned Parenthood of Nebraska & Council Bluffs

In 2003, Planned Parenthood of Nebraska & Council Bluffs is created with the joining of two strong affiliates — PP Omaha-Council Bluffs and PP Lincoln.
