For Teens

The Family Life Institute also operates TEEN L.I.N.K.S. (Leaders Impacting Neighbors with Knowledge on Sexuality), Planned Parenthood's teen peer education and leadership program. The peer teen program was established in 1979. Teen L.I.N.K.S. is funded by grants from private foundations and other important contributors. Members of this program are specially selected teens from local high schools. Through a rigorous training program, the peer teens acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to provide accurate information about sexuality to their peers and to refer them to other sources of help and information in the community.

The peer teens perform skits about prevalent adolescent issues before their peers at schools, religious organizations, residential facilities, recreational centers and other community agencies. Peer teens also are available to friends and other students on an informal basis. Their age and experience give them a unique advantage in being able to relate to the special pressures and problems of adolescents and enables them to make a difference in the lives they touch.

Through participation in the peer teen program, young people discover within themselves unique talents, confidence and poise. They develop admiration for themselves and others, public speaking abilities, group facilitation skills and the ability to work with a team. They become more aware of who they are and who they can become. The program is excellent preparation for future education, personal and professional development and success in life itself.

Teen L.I.N.K.S. programs are based in two of our locations, one in the city of Newark and the other in the city of Paterson. Programs are in operation from August through May of the following year.
