Taking the Plunge! Sixteen hearty (or foolish) adults and children, and Griffen the dog, gathered at the Essex, New York boat house of George Davis and Susan Bacot-Davis to plunge into the 33-degree water of Lake Champlain on Saturday, March 19, 2011 in support of Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson, Inc. Two inches of fresh, new snow was swept off the deck and ice chunks bobbed in the water as twenty guests observed the action. The plunger count includes one spectator who got enthused and joined the other swimmers, fully clothed. Post-plunge, everyone warmed up at George and Susan’s home with hot lunch and cocoa.  Supporters pledged in a variety of ways; per plunger, per second that one plunger stayed in the water (she did 45 seconds) or per temperature degree. Gifts and pledges total over $3,100 with more contributions expected.  All proceeds will provide the Essex County clients of Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson with medical services, sex education and sexual assault support services.

75th Celebration With Steinem Raises $50,000

“There’s no group, or organization, I would rather celebrate than Planned Parenthood,” stated Gloria Steinem, best-selling author and legendary women’s rights advocate.

Supporters gathered at the elegant Mohawk River Country Club in Rexford to celebrate the Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson (PPMH) milestone anniversary. There was an abundance of food, cheer, music and good company. The room was abuzz with positive energy.

Four supporters received Giraffe Awards for “sticking their necks out” for PPMH: Miriam “Mim” Butzel, foundation gifts; Julia Helfman, capital campaign leadership; Joel Helfman, finance and investment leadership; and Steve Hunter, merger planning.

The culmination of the evening was when Gloria Steinem, keynote speaker addressed guests in a warm and engaging manner. She praised Planned Parenthood’s commitment to providing local health care and education to more than one million people since its inception.

This sold-out event raised over $50,000 to benefit PPMH health and education services.

Safe Schools Roundtable Held October 7th

Local schools committed to reducing student bullying and homophobia got help from Planned Parenthood educators and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

“We’re presenting the Safe Schools Roundtable this fall for teachers, administrators and parents to ensure schools are safe places of learning for all students,” states Darren Cosgrove, community educator for Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson (PPMH).

The event was October 7th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. PPMH and the office of Senator Gillibrand co-hosted this discussion  to focus awareness on the bullying lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) students experience in schools and how to protect against student violence and harassment.

Today, LGBT youth are bullied two to three times more often than their heterosexual peers.  This harassment deprives students of equal educational opportunities by increasing their likelihood of skipping school, underachieving and dropping out. It is also detrimental to their mental and physical health.

Senator Gillibrand sponsored the Student Non-Discrimination Act that prohibits discrimination on the basis of real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity, in public schools.
