Parents and Families

Planned Parenthood believes parents are the primary sexuality educators of their children.

We also know it's not always easy for parents to talk with their children about sexuality issues. That's why Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho offers the following tools and programs to make these conversations easier:

  • Askable Parents, Teachable Moments
This session is designed for parents and professionals working with young children between 0-8 years old. Participants learn about child development and age-appropriate sexual behavior and work together to identify strategies to solve problems and deal with difficult situations.

  • What’s Happening to Me?
This class is for parents and their 9 to 12 year-old children. The program is specifically designed to enhance parent/child communication about sexuality and creates a relaxed yet professional atmosphere in which educators guide parents and children through activities that stimulate conversation, clarify family values, establish rules, and provide accurate information about the physical and emotional changes of puberty.

  • Parents are Powerful!
This class helps parents of teenagers become more aware of the questions teens have about sex. Parents learn how to become "askable," initiate conversations, set limits, and lay a good foundation for preventing unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
