Planned Parenthood and Health Insurance
Health Insurance is a product available to you which will help pay for healthcare costs. Nobody plans to get sick or injured, but accidents and illness happen. With insurance, you have the peace of mind of knowing you can get the care you need when you need it without huge medical bills. Insurance is a smart investment, even for healthy people.
Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest (PPGNW) has always accepted patients' insurance plans to help pay for the services they receive. Now with the Affordable Care Act, even more Americans have access to more affordable health insurance.
What Does Health Insurance Mean for You?
The health care law has many new benefits for our patients. Here are a few of them:
- You can get prescription birth control for free (no copay).
- You can get annual well-woman exams, as well as HIV and STD screenings, for free (no copay).
- Insurance companies can no longer deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition, like diabetes or cancer.
- You cannot be charged more for insurance simply because you’re a woman.
- You are covered for all your heath needs, not just family planning.
Enrollment in Washington - post March 31, 2014
Many Washington residents may enroll in Washington Apple Health (Medicaid) all year round. Apple Health is free health insurance. Eligibility depends on your income (under $15,000 for a single person; more if you have a spouse or dependent children). You must be a US citizen or legal resident who has been in the United States for at least 5 years. Apple Health also covers women who are pregnant and meet income eligibility (under $29,000 for a single woman; more if you have a spouse or dependent children).
Enrollment is easy. Go to wahealthplanfinder.org and follow the instructions. It only takes 15 minutes. If you have questions or run into a problem, we have staff that can help you. Call 206-320-7610 or email us at IPA@ppgnw.org
Preview of Open Season 2014If you live in Idaho or Alaska, or don't qualify for Washington Apple Health, you can purchase health insurance through a state “exchange” – a virtual shopping mall that only sells health insurance plans. Enrollment through a state exchange can happen only during an “Open Season.” The next open season runs from November 15, 2014-February 15, 2015 for coverage that will begin starting January 1, 2015.
The plans fall into 4 categories: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Platinum will cost the most – and have the most comprehensive coverage. But for most of our patients, bronze and silver, the less expensive plans, will provide the coverage you need. AND, depending on your income, the Federal government will help pay for your insurance through subsidies and tax credits.
PPGNW has staff that can help you understand your options for health insurance, and provide assistance in enrolling in a plan.
If you are interested in talking to an assister or setting up an appointment for enrollment assistance: Call 206-320-7610 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
