Workshops for Parents
Planned Parenthood provides workshops and materials to parents and families. Our workshops explore values, guidelines and communication skills for families around sexuality and other challenging topics. Workshops are offered as a single session or a two- or three-part series. We are happy to tailor our workshops to meet the needs of participants.
Parents and guardians play a very important role in developing sexually healthy children and adolescents, however not all parents are comfortable talking to their children about these tough issues. At every stage of development children need to learn age appropriate information, attitudes, and skills. Planned Parenthood's family programs are designed to offer parents communication tools to foster that parent-child relationship.
Why programs for families?
New survey data released by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy states that:
• Most teens (88%) say that it would be easier for them to postpone sexual activity and avoid teen pregnancy if they were able to have more open, honest conversations about these topics with their parents.
• Six out of ten teens (59%) surveyed also said that their parents are their role models for healthy, responsible relationships.
The Goal of our Family Programs is to change this data
Unfortunately, although data shows teens' desire for openness and role modeling within their relationships with their parents, data also reports that:
• 35% of girls become pregnancy at least once by age 20.
• Nearly one in four (23%) of teens say they have never discussed sex, contraception, or pregnancy with their parents.
• More than four in 10 teenage males do not receive any formal education about birth control or sexually transmitted diseases before they first have sex.
Workshops
We offer parent workshops that are tailored to meet the needs of participants. Workshops focus on improving parents' ability to be their children's primary source of sexuality education. They help build communication skills and family bonds while promoting self-esteem and decision-making skills.
Following are two examples of parent workshops that we offer. Please keep in mind that our community education coordinators are more than happy to work with you to assess the needs of your group and develop a program that will address those needs.
Get The FACTS (Families Actively Communicating Together) provides parents and other adults with the tools and factual information they need to be a resource to their children. This two-workshop series includes opportunities for participants to explore their own values and learn skills for communicating their values to their children.
Kids Need to Know is a workshop series for both parents and their children (ages 9-12) that focuses on the emotional and physical changes that occur during puberty. Participants will also explore different communication strategies to help with starting difficult conversations and with encouraging conversations once they have begun.
