HIV/AIDS Testing and Counseling
HIV is the virus which causes AIDS, a serious disease which affects the body's immune system and reduces the body's ability to fight infection. The virus is spread by contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood, semen, and vaginal discharge.
HIV testing is done with either a traditional blood-draw test--with results available in 7-10 days--or by using the Oraquick ADVANCE Rapid HIV Test--an anonymous oral swab test that provides accurate results in 20 minutes. OraQuick gets the results in 20 minutes so the patient does not have to schedule an appointment to come back to the health center for his or her results. OraQuick also does not require phlebotomy (blood draw) for the sample. HIV testing can be done anonymously at all PPCW Health Centers.
