Get Involved in Local Issues

Planned Parenthood Arizona invites you to join us in our mission to promote strong families, planned, wanted children and sexual health for all. Whether you want a place to volunteer your expertise or try something new, there's a way to TAKE ACTION and help us forge forward.

As a registered voter, you are a decision-maker. But without taking this critical first step, you are losing the most powerful tool you have for creating change. To register to vote in Arizona, visit Service Arizona to register online. If you have questions or need a voter registration form mailed to you, please contact Michelle Steinberg, Public Policy Director, at (602) 263-4226 or msteinberg@ppaz.org.

Vote in Every Election
Most voters only vote in national elections, but many state and local offices have direct influence over policies and practices that impact access to reproductive health care and sex education in schools. In off-year or primary elections, only about 20% of registered voters actually vote, which gives enormous power to only a handful of voters. Use Planned Parenthood as a resource to find out which offices are included in a particular election, who the candidates are and their position on choice. Don't let a small majority of voters determine the fate of reproductive health care and sex education in Arizona.

Know Your Elected Officials
Many of us don't know the name of our mayor or even the Arizona governor but it's easy to find out who these people are - especially with the Internet. As a voter, you will want to know them and they want to know you! Visit Project Vote Smart to find your federal and state officials. For other offices, such as city council, county supervisor or school board, visit the Arizona Secretary of State Web site and find your county elections office.

Sign Up for the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Network
Now that you've registered to vote and know who your elected officials are, you are ready to be an activist. Through this email network, you can send timely messages to local, state and federal decision-makers about public policy that impacts sexual and reproductive freedom. Sign up!

Volunteer
Being a volunteer advocate is a great way to get involved, meet other people in your community and directly connect to the political process. As a volunteer you can lobby at the Legislature, organize a phone bank or letter writing campaign, visit a high school to talk about abstinence-based sex education, or help out at a Planned Parenthood event. Being involved with politics can be more fun and less intimidating when you're among like-minded activists! Volunteer positions are available in a variety of departments, and can be designed to accommodate your schedule. From becoming a volunteer educator or advocate, to assisting our patients in health centers or joining a special events committee, there's an exciting volunteer position waiting for you.

To take action politically, contact Emily Jean Herrell, Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator, at (520) 784-5813 or eherrell@ppaz.org.  For more information on general volunteer opportunties, contact Kate Elliott, Volunteer Coordinator, at (602) 263-2225 or kelliott@ppaz.org
