Teen Education

Planned Parenthood provides health education for teens and young adults to foster informed and responsible decision-making.  Our education components are suited to different age ranges, both male and female, and are facilitated by experienced Health Educator staff.  Our programs include hourly sessions, workshops, teen peer education training, female rites of passage program, HIV education and prevention programs, parenting classes and volunteer training opportunities

Teen Peer Educators: High School Teens are trained as peer educators who interact with their community and share factual information related to healthy teen sexuality.  Our teens are available for group presentations and discussion sessions.  Teens involved in this program also pledge to remain pregnancy and STD free during their involvement with the program.

To become involved and become a teen clinic intern please contact Cynthia Brown either by email preventiongirl@ppaustin.org or phone 275-0171 ext. 104.  Also, please view our event calendar for upcoming teen education events.

Summer Youth Program: Planned Parenthood is a partnership nonprofit organization with the City of Austin Summer Youth Employment Program. Through this program, the city provides employment for teens in the private and non-profit sectors. Agencies, such as PP, open their doors to provide a working environment for teens.  Teen participants learn valuable health and decision-making skills.

Planned Parenthood Workshop Topics for Young People Include:
Connecting with Your Health:  This specific workshop can be set up as a 3-4 hour session discussing physical health and nutrition, emotional health, spiritual well-being, financial goals and planning, alternative healing methods, support systems, and goal setting.  This is an interactive workshop with hands-on activities in all areas.

Culture and Diversity:  This workshop can be provided as a half or full day event.  Includes defining culture and diversity, sharing culture, and practical tools for incorporating diversity into everyday life.

HIV:  Beyond the Basics:  Examines behaviors, assessed personal risk, partner negotiation skills, testing, psychosocial dynamics, and referrals for HIV service providers.

Female Rights of Passage Program:  This is a 2 part program, which focuses on providing health information, combined with a support system for adolescent girls.  Participants work with adult mentors throughout the program and do activities such as creating a personal health plan, developing communication skills, and assessing personal values.  The second part of this program is based on the 7 principals of Kwanzaa and incorporating these principals into daily life.  This program can be set up as an 8 or 15 week development series.
