Emergency Contraception (EC)
"Morning-After Pill"
Emergency contraception (also known as the "morning-after pill") is a special dose of commonly prescribed birth control pills that can help to prevent pregnancy when taken within 5 days (120 hours) of a birth control accident or unprotected sex. Emergency contraception does not prevent HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
Plan B, a brand of emergency contraception, was approved by the FDA for over-the-counter (OTC) availability for women 18 and older. It will be available in Austin in early Fall, as soon as pharmacies receive shipments of Plan B marked for OTC use. Until then and after, Planned Parenthood will provide emergency contraception as a walk-in service anytime we're open.
