* Percent of effectiveness during the first year of typical use of contraception. Source: Contraceptive Technology, 18th revised edition, ed. Robert A. Hatcher and others. New York: Ardent, 2004. ** Treatment initiated within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse reduces the risk of pregnancy by at least 75%. *** The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has indicated that spermicides that contain Nonoxynol-9 (N-9) are not effective in the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Sexually active women are advised to talk with their health care providers about their risk for STIs and unwanted pregnancy when considering contraceptive options. **** Not available at Planned Parenthood Austin clinics. Birth Control Choices
We offer complete instruction on all FDA-approved birth control methods, including condoms, diaphragms, birth control pills, Depo-Provera injections, IUDs (intrauterine devices), cervical caps, and fertility awareness methods. Referrals are available for tubal sterilization and vasectomy.
Hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills and Depo-Provera) may be started without an exam. You will see a nurse practitioner who will review your medical history and prescribe the method you choose. Unfortunately, federal restrictions do not allow this convenient option at the Downtown Clinic.
