2014: Cocktails for a Cause
For the second year, 40 guests met likeminded people, drank fine wine and ate fancy cheese at The Charles F. Lucas Confectionery & Wine Bar in Troy, NY. The event raised more than $1,300 for UHPP's exceptional services and honest education.
"From the late 1800s to 1951, The Confectionery was a classy place for women to frequent," said UHPP Director of Development Amber Sickles. Owners Vic Christopher and Heather LaVine painstakingly restored the space over several years. They also generously donated the venue's patio for PPYL's April 23 event.
UHPP Director of Education Meaghan Carroll shared stories from her team's work with local middle and high school students. UHPP Board Member Karla Gareau explained how she made a significant donation to UHPP through the Healthy You monthly giving club. Karla and Meaghan drew raffle winners for gift certificates to The Standard, The Albany Railyard, Dating Coach, and two tickets to UHPP's Let's Talk About Sex (2009) film screening and panel discussion on May 7.
Many thanks to Albany Medical Center, PPYL's signature sponsor for the third consecutive year!
2013: Comedy for a Cause
Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood Young Leaders hosted its first Comedy for a Cause fundraiser on November 8 at The Water Works Lounge in Albany.
About 50 guests, including many new faces, packed the house to see Albany's funniest comedians and to support our area's leader in reproductive health.
Hosted by Jennifer McMullen, the event featured six local comics, including the hilarious Jon Tenace, former UHPP Peer Educator. Jon spoke about his experience in high school as a member of the S.T.A.R.S. program (Seriously Talking About Responsible Sex). Peer Educators are trained by UHPP education staff on sexual health and responsibility and work closely with other teens to promote healthy sexuality.
Many thanks to everyone who came out the show! The Water Works Lounge generously provided the space for attendees to enjoy a wonderful evening. Jennifer McMullen, Frank Gentile, Shawn Gillie, Brendan Joseph, William Hughes, Wanda Luv and Jon Tenace had the crowd roaring with laughs all night! We're especially grateful for the support of the event's sponsor, Albany Law School Dean Penny Andrews, and to our 2013 PPYL Presenting Sponsor, Albany Medical Center.
2013: Trivia Tournament at Revolution Hall
On June 13 Revolution Hall in Troy, the winners from the first annual Trivia Tournament in June 2012 strode confidently to the Planned Parenthood Young Leaders' trivia registration desk.
With Golden Speculum award in hand, the team formerly known asWe Support Women With Many Positions announced their intention to defend their crown.
The team renamed itself Grace Hopper Final Answer to commemorate their final answer in last year's winning effort. They faced a stiff challenge from 15 other teams and a record 93 total guests eager to unseat them from glory.
As Beau Comeaux led the competitors through five rounds of trivia, the teams struggled to find the right answers. The competition concluded with a "final Jeopardy" question, allowing teams to bet anything from none to all of their points in order to claim victory.
In the end, a new team prevailed. With triumphant glee, Sassy Pants and Sassafrass held their 2013 Golden Speculum Award high. It seemed fitting that some members of the hardworking event planning committee were among the new winners.
Planned Parenthood Young Leaders (PPYL) is a group of 40ish and younger professionals who support Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood's mission. The goal of PPYL is to build a new generation of supporters and advocates for reproductive choice, and the group hosts three annual events. Albany Medical Center is PPYL's signature Sponsor.
