MEMPHIS, TN — Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) will present Betsy Mandel-Carley with the fifth annual James Award during a reception at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Just For Lunch, 2092 Poplar Avenue.

Each year, PPGMR honors a Memphis-area resident who has shown unwavering support of the ideals of Planned Parenthood. This year’s recipient, Betsy Mandel-Carley is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been in private practice in Memphis since 1983. She is being honored for her years of supporting Planned Parenthood providing service to the Memphis community. Notably, Ms. Mandel-Carley testified in the original Texas court case that led to the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States.

Tickets to the event are $75 per person and may be purchased on line (click here), or by phone by calling 901-725-3051. All proceeds will go to PPGMR’s reproductive health care, education and advocacy programs.

The James Awards are named for Memphis City Councilman and business leader Bob James, a long-time supporter of Planned Parenthood who bequeathed $1,000,000 to create an endowment fund at the Community Foundation to support PPGMR. His generosity allows PPGMR to continue its mission of serving clients regardless of their ability to pay.

For more information about the Bob James Awards, please call Joan Carr, Director of Community Affairs at (901) 725-3008.
