Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region Now Offering Birth Control to Men
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
MEMPHIS, TN — Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is now offering family planning services for men.
Men can now receive supplies of condoms, up to 20 per month when they come for a family planning visit at our health center at 1407 Union Avenue, Suite 300. No appointment is necessary. For more information, call (901) 725-1717 or log on to www.ppgmr.org.
Male family planning visits cost $0 to $10, according to the client’s income. Men who come in for family planning services can also receive rapid HIV testing for free. STD testing and treatment are also available to men and women at Planned Parenthood on a fee per service basis.
The introduction of men’s family planning services coincides with National Condom Week, February 14-20, 2009. Beginning Monday, February 16th, while supplies last, Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region will offer free condom packs to the first 150 people who come in and ask for one.
National Condom Week is designed to educate Americans about how correct and consistent use of condoms effectively prevents sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unintended pregnancies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, consistent and correct use of male latex condoms can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of STD and HIV transmission. Condoms are also 98 percent effective in preventing pregnancy when used consistently and correctly. In fact, male latex condoms rarely fail. It’s estimated that condom failure occurs among only three percent of couples using condoms consistently and correctly during the first year of use.
