Information on hMPXV (Monkeypox)

hMPXV, also known as monkeypox — the common name for a particular, contagious orthopox virus — causes a rash and flu-like illness, and can spread to any person through close contact, including skin-to-skin contact. While scientists are still researching whether monkeypox can be spread directly through vaginal fluids or semen, spending time being physically intimate with someone — for example, through cuddling, kissing, and sex — does play a role in transmission. This transmission can occur regardless of a person's gender identity, sexual orientation, or the gender identity or sexual orientation of their partner. However, sexual contact is not the only way the virus can spread.

If you suspect that you have been exposed to monkeypox, or have symptoms, know that you can come to your local Planned Parenthood. We will be able to connect you with the appropriate resources for diagnosis confirmation and treatment.
