Derry (NH) – Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) today announced that the Alexander Eastman Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant in support of its Derry Health Center.

PPNNE's Derry health center, located at 4 Birch Street in downtown Derry, provides quality, affordable reproductive health care and education on a sliding fee scale, ensuring access to health care for all patients. Services offered at the Derry health center include: annual gynecological exams with screenings for five types of cancer; birth control education and supplies; emergency contraception; pregnancy testing and options counseling; sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment; confidential HIV testing and counseling; limited primary care; and HPV/Hepatitis vaccines.

With this generous grant from the Alexander Eastman Foundation and support from other donors, PPNNE’s Derry health center will be able to serve over 2,500 local women, men and teens in the coming year.

The patients who turn to PPNNE’s Derry health center are overwhelmingly young, low income, and uninsured/underinsured. In 2012, 76% of patients were under the age of 30; 70% were living at or below 150% of the federal poverty level ($16,755 for one person); and 59% were uninsured. Ensuring access to vital care regardless of ability to pay, PPNNE gave away nearly $800,000 in free and discounted care to Derry area patients last year.

The Alexander Eastman Foundation is one of PPNNE’s longest-standing foundation partners, providing generous annual support to the Derry health center since 1998. The goals and mission of PPNNE’s Derry health center, to provide affordable reproductive health care and sexuality education with a focus on prevention, are closely aligned with the Alexander Eastman Foundation’s priorities to improve the health and well-being of residents of the greater Derry area through education, building strong family systems, and expanding access to quality health care and prevention services.

Together, PPNNE and the Alexander Eastman Foundation will continue to serve and strengthen local communities, working to improve the health and lives of low income and underserved women, teens and families in the greater Derry area.
