This Valentine’s Day, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County Joins One Billion Rising; Asks Members of Congress to Support the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act

Hempstead, NY — This Valentine’s Day, Planned Parenthood is partnering with One Billion Rising, an effort organized by Eve Ensler to rally one billion people around the world to stand up and end violence against women. As part of this effort, Planned Parenthood is urging their supporters to send their members of Congress a special Valentine – asking them to pass a strong, inclusive reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Locally, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) is organizing students on college campuses to voice their support for the bill. Staff and interns will be on SUNY Farmingdale and Adelphi University campuses, asking students to sign a petition urging their members of Congress to pass the bill. PPNC is also collaborating with other campus groups including a Medical Students for Reproductive Rights group on the Hofstra University campus and Senoritas Latinas Unidas at Adelphi. Both groups will be hosting an event to raise awareness about this important legislation These activities will culminate with the Facebook posting of PPNC staff, interns, volunteers and advocates doing their rendition of “Break the Chain,” a dance inspired by the One Billion Rising Campaign.

“In addition, here in New York, we have the opportunity to pass equally important legislation, the Women’s Equality Agenda, which contains important protections that improve the health, safety and economic wellbeing of every woman and her family in this state.” said JoAnn D. Smith, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC).

Planned Parenthood health centers proactively screen and refer for intimate partner violence in a safe setting, and are committed to their roles as confidential and trusted health services providers. Moreover, Planned Parenthood provides sex education, information and programs that include important conversations about healthy relationships. Planned Parenthood continues to be there for women whenever they need help – no matter what.
