Sex After Sixty

Sexuality is a big subject, one that is important throughout our lives. People are sexual beings from birth to death, and sexuality is a natural, healthy, life-long part of being human. Exploring sexuality at any age or stage of life can lead to more richness and contentment in relationships, and within ourselves.

What is sexuality?

Sexuality includes sexual intercourse – but it encompasses so much more. It defines and is defined by our attitudes, values, and feelings. Sexuality is uniquely individual, personal, and private, but simultaneously public. Representations of sexuality are everywhere in the media, but they don’t always resonate with our personal opinions or values. In addition, common social norms and customs play into how we think about sexuality. Sexuality is connected to our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives; it is also part of our relationships, self-image, and ideals, as well as our behaviors. This diagram of Holistic Sexuality (PDF) can be used as a guide for discussion or thinking about the many ways sexuality is integral to who we are and how we live our lives.

The resources included here (PDF) are a starting point for seniors thinking about sexuality and looking for more information – whether you’re in your sixties, seventies or beyond.
