The U.S. Supreme Court decided in a 5-4 vote that a closely held corporation should not be forced to provide coverage for certain contraceptives for women if the company deems it violates its religious freedom. The company at the center of the debate is Hobby Lobby.
"When you step back and you look at the breadth and the depth of these decisions... women are repeatedly being disadvantaged," says Lori Lamerand, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan. Lamerand says men do not face the same sort of regulations on their sexual health. "We [the American political system] are not saying to men 'We want to regulate your sexual lives.'" But, Lamerand says, women are having their sexual lives regulated.
"I think that this swaying-away from science should trouble all of us."
Lamerand was interviewed on The Craig Fahle Show by Michigan Chronicle Editor and WDET Senior News Analyst Bankole Thompson.
