Representative Hayworth Votes for Dangerous Anti-Women’s Health Bill
Poughkeepsie, NY - Representative Nan Hayworth (R-19) voted in favor of H.R. 358, a dangerous bill that will drastically erode women’s health and reduce access to basic health care services and information. The bill, which passed in a vote of 251- 172, bundles together several proposals that undermine women’s access to health care and lets hospitals turn away women who may need a life saving procedure. Since 1986, hospitals have been prohibited from refusing to provide care to a patient in a life-threatening emergency situation. Current federal law requires hospitals to at least stabilize the patient, offering an essential protection for patients. But under H.R. 358, this critical protection would no longer apply to a woman who needs an abortion to save her life.
Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley’s President and CEO Ruth-Ellen Blodgett issued the following statement today:
“Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley once again denounces so called “pro-choice” Representative Nan Hayworth’s (R-19) vote in favor of HR 358.
“She has continuously voted against women’s reproductive health and put politics ahead of all the other critical issues facing this country. It is clear that Representative Hayworth can no longer hide behind her “pro-choice” stance. Policies such as these put real women’s lives at risk. Representative Hayworth can’t continue to say one thing and do another. She has joined her anti-choice colleagues time and time again on the assault on women’s health. The Representative needs to stop supporting efforts to undermine women’s health and stop misrepresenting her position on reproductive rights to her constituents.”
