Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC Statement on Supreme Court Ruling in June Medical Services Case
For Immediate Release: June 30, 2020
On June 29, 2020, the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana's medically unnecessary abortion restriction in June Medical Services v. Russo, meaning that abortion is still safe and legal in every state in America. If you need to access care, we are here for you!
While we celebrate this victory, the fight for reproductive freedom for all is far from over. A person’s ability to access abortion still is determined by where they live, how much money they make, and the color of their skin. We are thankful to have reproductive champions in our community pushing for patient-focused laws like DC’s newly passed Strengthening Reproductive Health Protections Amendment Act, but we cannot ignore that we are still in a world where politicians have pushed basic health care almost out of reach for millions of Americans.
Reproductive healthcare is essential — it should not be limited to a privileged few. Right now people need more access to health care, not less. Even as our nation confronts the COVID-19 pandemic, racism and continuous attempts to dismantle our reproductive rights, PPMW is committed to supporting our patients — no matter what.
