Planned Parenthood Keystone, Attorney General Josh Shapiro, and coalition partners hold press conference as Supreme Court hears challenges to Texas Senate Bill 8.

The event is one of hundreds planned across the country in a national day of mobilization to defend reproductive rights.

Today, the Texas state legislature will enact one of the most dangerous abortion bans in recent history, Senate Bill (SB) 8. This law bans abortions in the state as early as six weeks in pregnancy – before most people even know they are pregnant -- and includes a provision that allows private individuals to file lawsuits to enforce the ban.

The obvious aim of these bills is to further stigmatize and criminalize people seeking abortions as well as their healthcare providers.  Undoubtedly, each of these harmful bills will create more punitive barriers to care...

Abortion is essential and time-sensitive health care. By providing medication abortion via telehealth, we can make it easier for patients to access safe and legal care in a timely manner, no matter who they are or where they live.

The state is wasting the taxpayers’ time and money by continuing to focus on slashing access to reproductive health care. Six-week bans on abortion have been struck down each time they have been challenged. [...] it is unconstitutional for a state to prohibit a person from choosing abortion before viability—regardless of any exceptions made in the law.
