Letter to the Editor: Stop Politicizing Health Care, The Journal News, September 9, 2012

Re: "Video advocates loose sexual morals," Aug. 30 letter:

The letter writer misinterprets the "Call Me Maybe" video parody being shared on Facebook and seen by more than 69,000 YouTube viewers. The video expresses the frustration of women finding their health care politicized by opportunists who seem to have little interest in the needs of women, families or children.

Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic can't take credit for the video. It was actually made by CoochWatch2012, an activist group formed to oppose the anti-abortion tactics of Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. However, we do stand up for our mission and values. Planned Parenthood provides affordable quality care and accurate, nonjudgmental information and health counseling.

The video derives from  a pop tune that skyrocketed to the top of the charts and has been parodied by everyone from Sesame Street to Star Wars to the Olympic Swim Team.

This particular version conveys a position Planned Parenthood has advocated all along - that women, not politicians, should make personal medical decisions about birth control and pregnancy.

We can't seriously trust the opinions of a religious leader who uses the word "female organ" rather than the word "vagina" when it comes to these important issues. The truth remains that it is women, finally, who must make informed, independent decisions about health, sex and family planning.

As religious leaders ourselves, we know Planned Parenthood serves all women and we are proud to show our support.
