Health Centers on Wheels

PPHP would like to introduce its new educational and clinical center…on wheels.  With this new resource, we will be able to make even more “house calls” – extending our excellent education programs and patient care to numerous communities outside of our health centers.

SW_for_web.jpgOur SmartWheels vans promote a message of good reproductive and sexual health by encouraging people to get tested for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, birth control options and emergency contraception, pick up free condoms, and make appointments for additional services at a health center. Staffed by PPHP educators, they also bring accurate, confidential information about reproductive health to teens and adults throughout Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.

Clinician-and-patient-web.jpgRecently upgraded, the latest SmartWheels education and testing van is a customized 27-foot Winnebago that's larger and better equipped than its 18-year-old predecessor. The new van has a clinician and educator on board and can offer expanded services to people who might otherwise never visit a health center.

The vehicle will visit homeless and domestic violence shelters, health fairs, special events, community centers, colleges, day laborer sites, and other venues where at-risk populations in Suffolk County can be accessed.

The van has a visitation room with a privacy door for confidential visits and a restroom to allow for urine-based pregnancy tests. It also offers more birth control choices, including oral contraceptives and other hormonal options.

The purchase of the new van and staffing for the first year were funded entirely by philanthropic dollars. Support was provided by the Long Island Community Foundation, a division of The New York Community Trust; The Ralph Schlaeger Charitable Foundation; the Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation; and an anonymous contributor. Last year, the vans reached more than 8,000 people and tested 857 people for HIV.
