COLUMBUS, Ohio Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio are alarmed by Governor DeWine’s announcement of new proposed rules for Ohioans seeking gender-affirming care, which are currently being considered by the Ohio Department of Health and Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Erica Wilson-Domer, President & CEO at Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, released the following statement:

“This is the latest attempt by our lawmakers to undermine Ohioans’ right to bodily autonomy. These proposed rules are not based in science, and they go against recommendations from expert medical providers. Gender-affirming care is lifesaving care, full stop.

“It is vital that those seeking care understand that these proposed rules have not taken effect and there is no change in the way our patients receive gender-affirming care at this time. We are proud to provide high-quality gender-affirming care to adults in our communities, and we will continue to do so in accordance with Ohio law.

“Our doors are open, and if you are seeking this care, we are here for you – no matter what.”

Lauren Blauvelt, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, released the following statement:

“When people are truly seen and cared for, their lives, their families’ lives, and their communities are better and healthier. We will continue to defend the rights of transgender, nonconforming, nonbinary, and intersex Ohioans against ongoing attacks, including the right to affirming health care. If these proposed rules go into effect, Ohioans will be required to jump through medically unnecessary hoops to get the care they need. The proposed rules could also open the door for more restrictions in the future.

“Now is the time to make your voice heard by submitting public comments before 5 pm on Friday, January 19 and urging policymakers to not enact these unnecessary and harmful rules. We remain committed to the ideal that all people across our state, regardless of who they are, deserve access to quality, affirming health care.”
