Press Release 11-09-11: PPDE Applauds the Defeat of the So-called “Personhood” Amendment
Statement from Planned Parenthood of Delaware Presdent and CEO, Nanci Hoffman
“Planned Parenthood of Delaware applauds the defeat of the so-called 'personhood' amendment,” said Nanci Hoffman, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Delaware. “The amendment would have been a major blow to women’s health and the rights of families to make their own reproductive health decisions. Mississippians rejected the amendment because they understand it could have kept a woman with a life-threatening pregnancy from getting the care she needs, could have allowed the government to intrude into private doctor-patient relationships, and could have criminalized everything from abortion to common forms of birth control, such as the pill and IUDs. Yesterday voters sent a clear message that women’s health should not be jeopardized in the name of extreme ideology.”
The mission of PPDE is to ensure the right of all individuals to access the appropriate information and the services necessary to make and act on personal decisions related to their own reproduction, sexuality and health. Planned Parenthood provides family planning, gynecological services, abortion, cancer screening, STD testing and treatment, health education, and more. The agency serves all three counties, has operated in Delaware for 80 years, and serves 10,000 clients a year. For further information, visit www.ppdel.org.
