Buffalo's Own Wendie Malick to Speak at Planned Parenthood Annual Event
Actor and Planned Parenthood Advocate to Participate in Annual Celebration Event
BUFFALO, NY - Planned Parenthood of Western New York, Inc. welcomes Buffalo native Wendie Malick, Actor and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Board of Advocates Member, as the keynote speaker at “Celebrate with Friends,” an evening event for Planned Parenthood of Western New York. “Celebrate with Friends” will be held on Wednesday May 13, 2009 in the Mary Seaton Room of Kleinhans Music Hall. Doors open at 5:30 pm with dinner served at 6:45 pm. Supporter tickets are $75 and Benefactor tickets are $125. Reservations are required. Born in Buffalo, NY, two-time Emmy and Golden Globe nominee, Wendie Malick, has been a proven comedic breakout artist for the last decade. Malick will next be seen in the Paramount feature film The Goods, and Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Her other feature films include Adventureland, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Racing Stripes, The American President, and many others. On television, she joined the cast of Frasier for their final season. For seven seasons Malick starred as the outrageous ex-model and fashion editor, Nina Van Horn in Just Shoot Me. Malick also garnered four CableACE awards for her portrayal of Judith Tupper Stone on HBO's Comedy Series, Dream On. (Malick’s full bio is available at the end of this release.)

Toy is an active donor and development committee member who has great passion for the mission of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is also extremely proud to honor three outstanding members of the community with awards:
The 2009 William B. Hoyt Advocacy for Choice Award: Given to a person or organization in recognition and appreciation of outstanding public commitment and integrity to the preservation of reproductive freedom and women's rights. This award will be presented to Kristen M. Grandinetti, Elementary Teacher Niagara Fall Central School District, Community Activist/Volunteer.
Grandinetti is a fourth grade teacher for the Niagara Falls City School District and is currently a candidate for the Niagara Falls City Council. Grandinetti has earned degrees from NCCC, Buffalo State College and holds two Masters Degrees from Niagara University. After many years in the tourism, food and beverage industry, she followed her dream to become a teacher. Inspired by her dad, a dear friend who she lost tragically (Carolyn Van Schaik), and her students Grandinetti learned the value and importance of being a good example of giving back, of sharing time and ideas.
Planned Parenthood of Western New York 2009 Education Award: Given to a person or organization in recognition and appreciation of outstanding public commitment to comprehensive sexuality education. This award will be presented to Stephanie Wright, Human Sexuality Educator, Chautauqua County Department of Health.
Wright is responsible for the education and outreach of the county's Reproductive Health Services program. Wright works extensively with the county's public schools delivering dynamic youth-driven sexual health presentations. Her support of at-risk youth and young adults is evident throughout the community by the comprehensive training she provides for victims of domestic violence, inmates, migrants and immigrants, those in recovery of drug and alcohol abuse, and those who suffer from mental illness. She also works closely with the Faith Based Initiative presenting to parent groups on the topic of communicating with teens about sexuality. Wright co-chairs the Chautauqua County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition and is an active member of the Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, Incarcerated Transition Coalition, and the Western New York HIV/AIDS Public Health Coalition.
Planned Parenthood of Western New York 2009 Health Award: Given to a person or organization in recognition and appreciation of significant contribution to the advancement of health in Western New York. This award will be presented to Virginia C. Oehler, MS Ed., Program Advisor, Community Health Foundation of Western & Central New York.
Oehler has served non-profit, health related organizations for nearly forty years. She was Chief Administrator of Our Lady of Victory Infant Home, Executive Director of United Cerebral Palsy Association of WNY and Executive Director of the Care Management Coalition of WNY. She is presently Principal of VC Purcell & Associates, serving as Program Adviser to the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York where she coordinates the CHF Health Leadership Fellows program. Oehler has served on numerous Boards of Directors, including Leadership Buffalo, United Way Agency Executives, Key Bank, Erie Community College Foundation, Coordinated Care, WNY Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency. She presently chairs the Board of the Center for Transportation Excellence. Among her awards of recognition are: the Athena Award, and the National United Cerebral Palsy Association’s Executive Director of the Year.

In 1999, Malick received critical acclaim for her dual roles as famous advice columnists Abigail Van Buren and Ann Lander's in the TV movie Take My Advice. Other television series work includes starring roles in Trauma Center and Good Company, recurring roles on NYPD Blue, Anything But Love, Baywatch and Kate & Allie, and guest roles on CSI, The X-Files, Seinfeld, LA Law, Cybil, Mad About You and Law & Order. She also starred in the television movies Paper Dolls, Dynasty: The Miniseries, Apollo 11, Perfect Body and North Shore Fish, in a role she originated on stage.
Malick's theatrical credits include originating roles in Israel Horowitz's North Shore Fish (New York), Victor Bumbalo's Questa, and Oliver Hailey's Round Trip (Los Angeles), for which she was nominated for the Artistic Director's Award as Best Lead Actress in a Play in 1995. In Los Angeles she was also seen in Vagina Monologues, The Guys, Santaland Diaries, and joined the original cast for the final week of Steve Martin's The Underpants. Malick also starred in the Off Broadway play Burleigh Grimes and recently received rave reviews for her performance in Blithe Spirit at the Williamstown Theater Festival.
In 2000 Malick was honored by Women in Film as "A Woman of Vision", along with Tipper Gore, Gwen Ifills and Roseanne. She is on the Board of Directors of The Environmental Media Association, the Board of Advocates for Planned Parenthood who honored her in 2006 as a “Champion of Choice,” and the Advisory Board of The Humane Society. Through their charitable gift fund, "A Drop in the Bucket", she and husband, Richard Erickson support a medical center in the Congo and share an ongoing commitment to a women's shelter in Tijuana. They live in the Santa Monica Mountains with three dogs, two horses and a cat.
