Planned Parenthood Condemns Governor Brewer for Restricting Women's Access to Preventive Care

PRESS STATEMENT

PHOENIX– Planned Parenthood Arizona is concerned that Governor Brewer signed House Bill 2800, intended to reduce access to preventive health care for thousands of Arizonans.

We are most concerned about the women and men who could be forced to go without health care as a result of this bill,” says Bryan Howard, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona. “We remain committed to providing Arizona communities with the professional, nonjudgmental and confidential health care they have relied on for 78 years.”

The bill could block access to Planned Parenthood Arizona for thousands of low-income women relying on Planned Parenthood health centers for preventive care, including lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control and annual exams. This bill shows lawmakers and Governor Brewer are more interested in restricting health care access than representing Arizonans, as recent polling shows 78 percent of Arizonans favor state-funded family planning services for low-income women, including sex education and counseling services, women’s health services and birth control.

“It is unfortunate that lawmakers continue to put ideology and politics before the welfare of Arizonans,” continues Howard. “Women and men who come to Planned Parenthood aren’t making a political statement, they are coming to get the health care they need.”

Planned Parenthood believes health care should be about respect and dignity. The legislature and the Governor are clearly communicating they don’t respect Arizonans enough to make their own health care decisions, or to choose their own health care provider.
