Our Professional Training Program helps educators, social workers, and other professionals who work with youth develop the skills and awareness needed to be effective sexuality educators. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is also available to design customized trainings for organizations and community groups, as well as offer consultation and technical assistance to serve a variety of training needs. We also offer Sex Ed To-Go: a virtual, FREE sex ed resource for teachers, students, and parents/caregivers where you can learn at your own pace. The following topics have been carefully chosen to help professionals deliver quality sexuality education programs to their clients:

Adolescent Development

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Be able to identify and understand the stages of adolescence.
  • Increase knowledge of adolescent struggles.
  • Understand the positives and negatives of adolescent risk taking.
  • Learn strategies to help adolescent’s live healthy and responsible lives.
Answering Sensitive Questions

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Understand the different types of sensitive questions.
  • Be aware of the effective strategies and steps used while answering sensitive questions.
  • Be aware of “red flag” questions.
  • Increase comfort level in answering sensitive questions.
Birth Control

After completing lesson, participants will:

  • Be able to identify the various methods and non-methods of birth control available in the United States.
  • Be able to describe how each method works, the advantages and disadvantages of the methods, and the process by which they can be obtained.
  • Be able to answer common questions around birth control.
  • Understand factors associated with youth and different birth control methods.
  • Be aware of laws pertinent to minors.
Communication in Intimate Relationships

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Understand the role of sex and intimacy in relationships.
  • Define different components of relationships.
  • Be aware of relationship variations.
  • Understand conflicts role in relationships, and learn strategies to navigate conflict.
  • Identify effective communication strategies in relationships.
Human Trafficking

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Understand the current statistics surrounding sexually exploited youth.
  • Understand the difference between sex work and human trafficking.
  • Understand the layers and systems that contribute to the demand for sex trafficking.
  • Become familiar with terminology used in the commercial sex trafficking.
  • Become familiar with tactics used to sexually exploit youth.
  • Learn resources for sexually exploited youth in their community.
Introduction to Planned Parenthood

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Understand the mission of Planned Parenthood.
  • Understand the services provided by Planned Parenthood and identify closest health center.
  • Become familiar with accessing our services.
  • Describe the different laws that impact patient privacy.
  • Define and describe mandated reporting for youth and adults.
Reproductive Access and Rights

After completing this training, participants will:

  • Define reproductive justice.
  • Identify intersectional factors that impact sexual and reproductive health.
  • Describe major sexual and reproductive health disparities.
  • Identify laws that bar access to reproductive healthcare.
  • Become familiar with the history of laws around reproductive health.
Reproductive Hormones and Sexual Response

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Understand sex chromosomes and common chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Identify sexual and reproductive hormones.
  • Explain the sexual response cycle.
  • Distinguish between the different types of orgasms, and challenges to orgasms.
Reproductive Justice and Health Disparities

After completing this training, participants will:

  • Understand social detriments of health.
  • Define factors that impact health disparities.
  • Identify health disparities in reproductive and sexual health.
  • Explain reproductive justice.
Sexual Orientation, Gender, and Health

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Increase knowledge and skills to create a safer environment for LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Understand correct terminology surround LGBTQ+ community.
  • Be aware of the continuums of sexual identities.
  • Create strategies for ensuring the safety of LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Recognize gender roles and their origins.
  • Identity how gender and sexual orientation impacts reproductive and sexual health.
Sexuality and Through the Lifetime

After completing this training, participants will:

  • Give examples of physical changes to sexuality that happens over a lifetime.
  • Recognize factors that impact relationships over a lifetime.
  • Identify main reasons and treatments to infertility.
  • Describe ways to manage the physical and hormonal changes that happen during menopause.
  • Recognize the physical barriers to sex and aging.
  • Learn skills on how to continue a healthy and sex life while aging.
Sexuality Education Overview

After completing the lesson, participants will:

  • Be able to define sexuality.
  • Understand the stages of sexual development.
  • Understand the two types of sexuality education.
  • Increase awareness of the California laws surrounding sexuality education.
  • Define a sexually healthy adult.
Sexuality, Values, and Diversity

After completing the training, participants will:

  • Define sexuality.
  • Describe the stages of behavior change and how they impact decisions regarding sexuality.
  • Differentiate between values and facts.
  • Interpret their personal values and how they impact working with others in regards to sexuality.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

After completing lesson, participants will:

  • Be able to name six of the most common STIs.
  • Be able to identify symptoms of STIs.
  • Be able to identify various treatment possibilities for STIs.
  • Understand the difference between viral and bacterial STIs.
  • Be able to identify curable versus incurable STIs.
  • Understand that there are different tests for each STI.
  • Understand that all STIs are preventable and treatable.
Trauma-Informed Care

After completing this training, participants will:

  • Define trauma and trauma-informed care.
  • Describe two effects that trauma has on the brain.
  • Identify two examples each of a trauma-informed environment and trauma-informed language.
  • Explain one tactic they can use to create a trauma-informed environment in their work.
Trauma Stewardship

After completing this training, participants will:

  • Define trauma and trauma-informed care.
  • Describe two effects that trauma has on the brain.
  • Identify two examples each of a trauma-informed environment and trauma-informed language.
  • Define Self-Care.
  • Understand vicarious trauma.
  • Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy modes of self-care.
  • Describe techniques to with others or themselves in moments of trauma.
