Adult Role Models workshops

Planned Parenthood of New York City trains local parents to be Adult Role Models who lead workshops for other parents on how to talk with children and teens about sexuality. Adult Role Models reach out to fellow parents wherever they find them -- in churches, GED programs, community organizations, and schools. Adult Role Models workshops diminish the anxiety many parents feel when talking with their children about sexuality by teaching them concrete skills. Adult Role Models workshops also encourage parents to use these important conversations to communicate their own values to their children.

The Adult Role Models workshop series is fun, interactive, and free of charge.

To schedule English or Spanish workshops in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx, please call: (212) 274-7362. The four workshops offered by Adult Role Models are:

Workshop 1
“Talking to Your Children about the Facts of Life” is a two-hour workshop designed to help parents talk with their children about sexuality. The workshop covers the definition of sexuality, how to answer tough questions about sexuality, and how to use everyday opportunities to start conversations about sexuality.

Workshop 2
“Opening the Lines of Communication” is a one-hour and thirty-minute workshop that helps parents to identify the sexuality messages they want to send to their children and the best way to communicate those messages.

Workshop 3
“Child Development and Sexuality” is a one-hour and thirty-minute workshop that takes parents through the stages of child sexual development and explores how they can help their children to become sexually healthy and responsible adults.

Workshop 4
“It Takes More Than Talk” is a one-hour and thirty-minute workshop focusing on the importance of combining good parental communication with parental monitoring and other behaviors that support and enhance the bond between parent and child.

The Adult Role Models Program is supported by the New York State Community-Based Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CBAPP) initiative.
