Activist Council

The Planned Parenthood Activist Council is a group that was launched at the beginning of 2005 for people who want to get more involved in Planned Parenthood's advocacy work. The group meets once a month to get more in-depth information about current issues, and to work together on advocacy projects and events.  Planned Parenthood of New York City holds periodic trainings to bring a new group of members into the Activist Council.

Members can join workgroups such as the Sex Ed Advocacy Group, the Political Action Group, the Fundraising Group, and the Field Group or they can participate on a project-by-project basis. After the trainings, members are free to decide what types of projects and what issues interest them most. Beyond the monthly meetings, the level of time commitment is up to each person.  The activities of the workgroups are:

Sex Ed Advocacy Group — Plans educational events and forums for the community, advocating for comprehensive sex education and cultivating sexual health awareness.

Fundraising Group — Plans 2-3 fundraising events a year to support the health care and educational services of Planned Parenthood of New York City.

Political Action Group — Organizes phone banks, rallies, letter-writing campaigns, and lobby visits to support or oppose  legislation. Raises money for PPNYC's political arm by hosting house parties.

Field Group — Distributes educational information regarding PPNYC's health care services, legislative work, and political activities in the process of signing up new supporters throughout the city at health fairs, community events, concerts, and festivals.

We invite you to join the Activist Council. All prospective members attend four upcoming training sessions at Planned Parenthood. The trainings are usually held seasonally on 4 consecutive Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm. The trainings are designed to bring new members up to speed on current reproductive health and rights issues, meet the other members of the new Activist Council group, and begin to talk about projects and actions. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary just interest in and enthusiasm for reproductive rights. To attend, you must RSVP at: http://www.ppaction.org/ppnyc/events/acsummertrainings2009/details.tcl
