PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF NEW YORK CITY WORKS TO PREVENT TEEN PREGNANCY (5/1/12)
(New York, NY) – May 2nd is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, which is organized by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and observed each year in May. Although teen pregnancy rates in New York City have gone down 27% overall, these rates still remain among the highest in the country. Planned Parenthood of New York City works each and every day to ensure that teens have access to both the information and health care services they need to lead healthy lives.
“At PPNYC we want to make sure that teens are making the right choices and have appropriate resources available to them, when it comes to sexual and reproductive health. We offer programs, workshops, and clinical services to serve New York City teens. Only by working with teens directly can we effectively combat teen pregnancy rates,” said Joan Malin, President and CEO of PPNYC.
Planned Parenthood of New York City offers the following programs for youth:
PPNYC’s Teen Advocates are highly trained peer educators for the South Bronx, Brooklyn, and the Lower East Side of Manhattan who conduct interactive workshops to educate young people about teens’ rights and access to sexual reproductive health care.
Center Teen Nights are designed to help overcome barriers that teens encounter in getting sexual and reproductive health care. At our Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn health centers we offer teen nights where teens can participate in free workshops and obtain services in a friendly environment.
Making Proud Choices is an evidence-based STI, HIV, and pregnancy prevention program for boys and girls aged 11-13, which is brought to selected after-school programs through collaboration with the Partnership for After School Education, other community organizations, schools, and faith-based organizations.
Taking Care of You provides sex education for youth in the Bronx through an eight-part workshop series that focuses on sexuality, disease prevention, and positive communication in relationships and highlights the range of options that young people have in order to help them make informed and empowered choices.
