PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF NEW YORK CITY CALLS ON NYS LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNOR CUOMO TO PASS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACT (5/2/12)
(New York, NY) –Today New York City elected officials, including NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, along with reproductive health advocates stood together at City Hall to urge for passage of the Reproductive Health Act (RHA). The Act guarantees, under New York law, that every woman has the right to make her own personal health care decisions and access to basic health services –as well as corrects a troubling gap in our current law that regulates abortion under the penal code instead of the health code where it belongs.
Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City issued the following statement:
“I want to thank the champions of reproductive choice in New York City for showing their support for the Reproductive Health Act. In a year that has seen more than 1,100 provisions across the country aimed at limiting or outright banning a woman’s access to reproductive healthcare, it is time for New York State to take a stand and help stem the tide on the assault on women’s reproductive health and freedom. PPNYC, as part of the largest national network of reproductive health providers, knows far too well the impact legislation - good and bad - can have on the women and families who rely on us every day. We are proud and grateful that our local leaders stand with us today - on behalf of women across New York - to call on the state leadership to act now to pass the RHA.
This is a non-controversial bill that simply guarantees a woman’s right to make her own private and personal healthcare decisions if her life is endangered. Seven out of ten New York voters support RHA, even across party and religious lines. Members of the NYS Senate, Assembly, and Governor Cuomo have all voiced their support for this piece of legislation, so what are we waiting for? This is simply a common sense measure that affirms New York voter’s values that a woman has a right to make her own personal healthcare decisions and also protects medical professionals from being prosecuted for trying to protect a woman’s health. The time for passage is now. ”
