The Council of the City of New York's Office of Communications Issues Statement on 2/9/11:
Joint Statement by Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Women's Issues Committee Chair Julissa Ferreras, Women's Caucus Co-Chair Jessica Lappin, Women's Caucus Co-Chair Rosie Mendez, Health Committee Chair Maria del Carmen Arroyo, and State and Federal Legislation Committee Chair Helen Foster
Re: Release of Planned Parenthood NYC Tapes
"The recently released tapes of Planned Parenthood of New York City staff by Live Action members are a reprehensible attempt to misconstrue the important work done by Planned Parenthood centers nationwide," said Speaker Christine C. Quinn." "These tapes, along with federal legislation to defund Planned Parenthood, are designed to discredit an organization that is a primary source of healthcare for many women. Planned Parenthood of NYC alone provides essential preventive and reproductive health care to 50,000 New Yorkers a year – many of whom would not otherwise receive care. We will not allow anti-abortion activists and legislators to discredit or defund Planned Parenthood. Women in New York and nationwide deserve access to reproductive and preventive care, including abortion – a legal medical procedure. To portray Planned Parenthood as somehow complicit in sex trafficking is absurd. They should instead be lauded for providing free and low cost, confidential, and safe healthcare to women young and old."
"I am appalled that this anti-choice group would use the serious issue of sex trafficking as a way to advance an agenda that wants to take away a woman's right to choose. To imply that Planned Parenthood would aid anyone whose sole purpose is to exploit women is irresponsible and reprehensible. Planned Parenthood of NY and all Planned Parenthood's around the country have a history of providing truthful services to women at a time of need. They do so in a professional manner that complies in accordance will all local, state and federal laws. We cannot leave the fate of women's choice in the hands of groups that mislead, misinform, and misguide women," stated Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras, chair of the Women's Issues Committee.
"PPNYC has a 90 year history and a sterling reputation. Live Action has a reputation, too, of doctoring tapes," said Councilmember Jessica Lappin, Co-chair of the Women's Caucus. "This is an outrageous effort to discredit PPNYC, which provides excellent care to 50,000 NY women every year. We won't let this attack stand. "
Rosie Mendez, Co-Chair of the NYC Council Women's Caucus said, "Planned Parenthood has provided the extremely valuable service of family planning to women in New York City for nearly a hundred years. It is a reputable and distinguished organization that serves everyone, regardless of age, income, or circumstance. This organization's integrity cannot and should not be smeared by anti-choice zealots using deceptive entrapment techniques."
"Planned Parenthood provides crucial medical services to women throughout the city, particularly low-income and immigrant women. These attempts to shut them down would only punish women who are seeking the healthcare that we all deserve," said Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Chair of the Health Committee. "Safe, affordable healthcare is already difficult to get in this country – we should be breaking down barriers, not erecting more."
"Federal legislators would be better served to focus their legislative efforts on bolstering our flagging economy and shrinking our national debt – not making it a priority to deny healthcare to millions of women," said Helen Foster, Chair of the State and Federal Legislation Committee.
Fight anti-choice efforts to defame Planned Parenthood and eliminate federal funding for all family planning providers. Make your voice heard at NYC rally on Saturday, 2/26, and urge your legislators TODAY to vote "no" on bill to cut off funding.
