False Claims Now Being Made against PPNYC
Statement from Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City (2/7/11)
(New York, NY)—"Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) is an advocate for and provider of reproductive health services and education for New Yorkers. Serving more than 50,000 clients annually, PPNYC’s health care centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx offer reproductive health services, including gynecological care, contraception, pregnancy testing, abortion, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and HIV testing and counseling.
False claims have been made about our services by an organization that opposes reproductive health care, including abortion. We expect this organization to publicize a number of secretly recorded videotapes made at our health centers in an effort to undermine these services. We have reviewed the tapes, and the conversation as portrayed is not accurate.
These tapes are part of a nationwide campaign by this group. Unlike in other publicized tapes, the hoax patients in New York were not able to get beyond the reception desk for a private consultation. Like in other encounters that have recently been publicized in Virginia, our staff responded professionally to questions, discussed these encounters with management, and provided a report to the FBI.
Had the teens in question come into our center, they would have met with a licensed social worker. All teens coming into Planned Parenthood of New York City are screened for child abuse and neglect. All teens who disclose abuse meet with a licensed social worker, who records and reports the abuse.
Teen health and safety is our top priority."
