PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF NEW YORK CITY JOINS THE 2012 TD FIVE BORO BIKE TOUR "RIDE FOR A REASON" CHARITY PROGRAM
Provides Opportunity for Bicyclists to Show Support through Fundraising (2/6/12)
(New York, NY) – Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) today announced its partnership with Bike New York as an official charity for the 2012 TD Five Boro Bike Tour “Ride for a Reason” charity program.
Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event. The event gives participants the unique and fun opportunity to bike through all five boroughs – a 40-mile, traffic-free ride for 32,000 cyclists.
“We are honored to be part of the TD Five Boro Bike Tour,” said Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City, “and we’re deeply grateful to Bike New York for supporting our work in the community. Tens of thousands of New Yorkers depend on Planned Parenthood for accessible, affordable health care each year. Thanks to this new partnership, any cycling enthusiast can help us ensure that they get it.”
The “Ride for a Reason” charity program includes more than 40 Bike New York charity partners, which provide people with the opportunity to participate in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour while helping to raise money for an organization they wish to support. Those interested in riding for PPNYC should visit www.ppnyc.org.
“We’re excited to have Planned Parenthood join the TD Five Boro Bike Tour as a charity partner,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “We wanted to show our support for Planned Parenthood and their mission to provide accessible health care to women. I’m confident that many riders from New York and around the nation will enthusiastically ride on the Planned Parenthood team.”
“Last year’s ‘Ride for a Reason’ charity program was a great success, raising more than $1.2 million for our partner charities,” said Podziba. “Fundraising for a charity is a tremendous way to give back and support a meaningful cause while having the time of your life biking throughout the most dynamic city in the world.”
Planned Parenthood’s four New York City health centers provide sexual and reproductive health care to nearly 50,000 patients each year. In addition to birth control and cancer screening, the health centers’ caring, professional clinicians offer a range of confidential health services, such as pregnancy testing, abortion, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. For people who wish to ride in the Tour, but not participate in the charity program, the Tour lottery for regular registration will close February 7 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
