PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF NEW YORK CITY APPLAUDS MAYOR BLOOMBERG FOR HELPING TO ENSURE THAT NO WOMAN IS DENIED BREAST CANCER SERVICES BECAUSE OF RIGHT-WING POLITICAL PRESSURE CAMPAIGNS
Statement from Joan Malin, President and Chief Executive Officer
of Planned Parenthood of New York City (2/2/12)
(New York, NY)—“Planned Parenthood of New York City joins hundreds of thousands of women nationwide in thanking Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his unflinching support for women’s health. With the $250,000 matching grant he pledged to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America today, Mayor Bloomberg has helped ensure that women who rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for breast cancer education and screening will not be harmed by the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s withdrawal of support.
“Time and time again, Mayor Bloomberg has shown tremendous leadership in protecting and promoting the health of New York’s women and families. We are proud to live and work in a city that takes women’s health so seriously, and we are proud to have a mayor who shows such personal commitment to keeping politics out of women’s health.
“Last year, Planned Parenthood of New York City provided more than 17,000 breast-health exams as part of well-woman annual exams. New Yorkers rely on Planned Parenthood of New York City for a wide range of accessible, affordable, high-quality health care services. The Komen Foundation’s decision will not affect any of them, but we are of course saddened that Komen has been bullied into dropping 19 Planned Parenthood partnerships that have helped so many women around the country.
“Planned Parenthood would like nothing more than for the Komen Foundation to reconsider its decision. However, our breast health programs will continue and be stronger than ever, thanks to supporters like Mayor Bloomberg.”

Serving more than 50,000 clients annually, PPNYC’s health care centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island offer reproductive health services, including gynecological care, breast and cervical cancer screenings, contraception, pregnancy testing, abortion, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and HIV testing and counseling. Through a threefold mission of clinical services, education, and advocacy, PPNYC is bringing better health and more fulfilling lives to each new generation of New Yorkers. As a voice for reproductive freedom, PPNYC supports legislation and policies to ensure that all New Yorkers—and, in fact, people around the world—will have access to the full range of reproductive health care services and information.
