NEW YORKERS: PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR THOSE TRICKY HOLIDAY CONVERSATIONS
Planned Parenthood of New York City Releases Conversation Guide: “Talking Turkey: 8 Easy Steps for Discussing Reproductive Health and Justice at the Holiday Table” (11/21/11)
(New York, NY)—The holiday season can be one of the most stressful times of the year, especially for New Yorkers whose extended families have very different politics. So this holiday season, Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) has released a conversation guide, "Talking Turkey: 8 Easy Steps for Discussing Reproductive Health and Justice at the Holiday Table," designed to help New Yorkers of all political stripes leap over any landmines that might come up in dinner table discussions.
“We believe that conversation is one of the most powerful tools we have,” said Roger Rathman, Acting Vice President of Public Affairs for PPNYC. “You can have 20 people sitting around the dinner table, and they’ll each have 20 very different views on what reproductive rights mean to them. But while our politics may differ, oftentimes our values—our conviction that everyone should be safe and healthy—are the same. We hope this guide helps everyone to better articulate their beliefs and spreads the word of how integral reproductive health is to all our lives.”
The guide, released by the organization just in time for Thanksgiving, includes a number of helpful tips and talking points, as well as tips on answering loaded questions.
“The holidays should be a time to celebrate with your families and loved ones, but all too often table talk turns into a battleground,” said Rathman. “We hope that this guide will keep the conversation civil, and help everyone realize that deep down, they have a lot more in common than they think.”
The guide is available at www.plannedparenthood.org/nyc/talking-turkey-38298.htm.
