Letter to the Editor, "Abortion Shouldn't Be Stigmatized," by Joan Malin, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of New York City, published in New York Post (11/15/10)
Re “Abortion Should Carry a Stigma” (Opinion by Abby Wisse Schachter in Capitol Punishment blog, November 10):
When it comes to making personal, medical decisions, no one knows better what's best for a woman than the woman herself. To argue that a woman should feel shame for making the decision that’s best for her and her family is both demeaning and sexist. Trust women, because women make thoughtful, difficult, moral decisions every day about their lives and those of their families.
If the goal is to reduce the need for abortion, resources must go into preventing unintended pregnancies, making birth control accessible and affordable, and funding comprehensive sex education -- not into stigmatizing women.
