PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF NEW YORK CITY CALLS ON LEGISLATURE TO PASS WOMEN'S EQUALITY ACT NOW (1/9/13)

(New York, NY)—Planned Parenthood of New York City stands with Governor Andrew Cuomo for his commitment to advancing reproductive health care policy as part of the Women’s Equality Act proposed in his State of the State address. We urge the New York state legislature to seize the opportunity the governor has presented and swiftly make the Women’s Equality Act law. We applaud the governor for using the Women’s Equality Act to endorse the Reproductive Health Act and correct a troubling gap in our current law that regulates abortion under the penal code instead of the health code where it belongs. Current New York law makes it a potential crime to provide an abortion to a woman late in pregnancy to protect her health.

Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City, issued the following statement:

“The Reproductive Health Act guarantees that a woman can make her own personal, private health care decisions, especially when her health is endangered during her pregnancy. At a time when a flood of provisions are aimed at limiting or completely banning a woman’s access to reproductive health care, it’s imperative that New York State stand up to protect reproductive health care and address the troubling gap in New York law by passing the  Reproductive Health Act early this year.

“As we approach the 40th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, the need for continued access to safe and legal abortion remains urgent. Our governor understands that abortion is a deeply personal and often complex decision for a woman, including in tragic situations that force women to choose between protecting their health or continuing with a very much wanted but risky pregnancy.

“The Reproductive Health Act is a simple measure that will protect women. Voters have been clear again and again about their commitment to women’s health. Seven out of 10 New York voters—across religious and party lines—support it.  The legislature is compelled to respond to voters and to position New York as a national leader by passing the Reproductive Health Act, as soon as possible.

“The Reproductive Health Act is a common sense approach that simply guarantees a woman’s right to make her own private and personal health care decisions if her life is endangered. The time for passage is now.”
