PPNYC TO OFFER TRAININGS IN SUPPORT OF CITY COUNCIL CLINIC PROTECTION PROJECT (1/24/13)
(New York, NY)—“Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) enthusiastically supports the Clinic Protection Project. We thank Council Speaker Christine Quinn for her continued support for unfettered access to reproductive health care in New York City. We look forward to partnering with the Speaker's Office by sharing our knowledge about escort philosophy, best practices for escorting, and training for volunteer escorts,” said Joan Malin, President and CEO of PPNYC.
The role of volunteer escorts is critical to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all PPNYC patients and their companions. On a regular basis, PPNYC’s health center patients and staff are subject to protest and harassment by anti-choice individuals and groups. PPNYC’s volunteer escorts fulfill a very important and much appreciated service of supporting our patients.
Over the years we have gained the knowledge and expertise needed to ensure the safety of all individuals receiving reproductive health services at our health centers. Our Escort Program is a part of the Planned Parenthood of New York City Activist Council, and all volunteer escorts receive extensive training before serving as an escort.
The training prepares escorts to: maintain strict confidentiality concerning clients, adhere to a non-engagement policy with protesters, and be fully aware of which protester activities are prohibited under the city, state, and federal clinic access laws. Escorts are trained to report and record all unlawful activities.
At PPNYC escorts are always supported by onsite security staff. We are also proud of the strong relationship we have with our local NYPD precincts to ensure the safety of our clients and our staff.
We look forward to working with the Speaker’s Office to provide comprehensive training for this exciting and important initiative.
