Letter to the Editor, "Education Fights Abortion Best," by Joan Malin, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of New York City, published in Daily News (1/12/11)
Re "Pregnant Pause for Thought" (editorial, January 10):
The issue is not how many abortions New Yorkers are or are not having. The real issue is the number of unplanned pregnancies and the fact that New Yorkers are simply not having safe sex.
Until we make sure health care and birth control are accessible for all and that sex education is taught to every young person, that is the problem we will continue to struggle with.
Until we preach the gospel of safe sex and offer unfettered access to information and education, we will also see continued increases in HIV and STD transmission rates in New York. Now isn't the time to demonize or to sermonize. Now is the time to make a commitment to the young people of New York to help them be safe and responsible.
