Planned Parenthood of New York City Welcomes Top Docs



New York (September 24, 2007) - Continuing a ninety-year tradition of providing top-notch reproductive health care, Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) is excited to introduce the two newest members of its illustrious medical practice: Gillian Dean, MD, MPH and Timothy Ryntz, MD.
 
The two join the expert medical team headed by leading reproductive health care practitioner and national spokesperson Maureen Paul MD, MPH. 
 
"Dr. Dean and Dr. Ryntz are at the top of the reproductive health profession and their joining PPNYC highlights this agency's ongoing commitment to providing top-notch reproductive health care services," says Dr. Paul. "As our new Associate Medical Director of Clinical Research & Training, Dr. Dean will be providing direct patient care as well as overseeing and implementing the agency's clinical research program and coordinating training programs for medical students, residents and fellows from several local medical schools.  Dr. Ryntz, our agency's Associate Medical Director of Clinical Services, provides abortion services through the second trimester, consults with clients on contraceptive needs and post-abortion follow-up, and is responsible for curriculum development and continuing education for advanced practice clinicians."
 
Drs. Ryntz and Dean complete the team which includes Dr. Paul and Bronwyn E.S. Fitz MD, Physician Director of Colposcoy Services.  At PPNYC, Dr. Fitz has been providing direct patient care, overseeing the cervical cancer-screening program, and participating in training residents and advanced practice clinicians.  She also provides direct patient care at PPNYC's sister affiliate, Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic.
 
Planned Parenthood of New York City is a leading reproductive health care provider, serving over 45,000 clients annually.  PPNYC has three health centers (Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn) and all three centers provide the full range of reproductive health care services, including contraception, family planning, STI testing and treatment, HIV testing and counseling, abortion services, options counseling, and breast, cervical and testicular cancer screening.  PPNYC provides these services to all individuals, regardless of age, gender, income, circumstance or immigration status.

Medical staff full bios:
 
Maureen Paul, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer
Prior to taking the reins at PPNYC, Dr. Paul was Chief Medical Officer at Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF and the Training Director of ANSIRH's Early Abortion Program. She served on the Board of Directors of the National Abortion Federation for several years and as Board President from 1998-2000. Dr. Paul co-directed collaborative family planning and abortion rotations at Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts for OB/Gyn residents at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and Baystate Medical Center.
 
Dr. Paul is the co-author of a manual entitled, Abortion Training: A Guide to Establishing an Effective Program at Your Facility and Chief Editor of the authoritative textbook, A Clinician's Guide to Medical and Surgical Abortion.  Additionally, Dr. Paul co-edits an American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology supplement on medical abortion, and has authored of numerous other scientific journal publications. She is recipient of the American Medical Women's Association 1994 Reproductive Health Award honoring her dedication to women's health, particularly in the area of abortion care.
 
Gillian Dean, MD, MPH, Associate Medical Director of Clinical Research & Training
Dr. Dean is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society for Family Planning.  She is a member of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, the National Abortion Federation. She is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Dr. Dean received her undergraduate degree in women's studies at Barnard College and her medical degree at Harvard Medical School.  She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco where she subsequently completed a Fellowship in Family Planning.  
 
As a resident, Dr. Dean was the recipient the Resident Research Award for Outstanding Research in Women's Health and the Chief Resident Award for Excellence in Evidence Based Clinical Practice.  She has authored two peer-reviewed articles on manual vacuum aspiration, chapters on the intrauterine device for the online resource UpToDate, and a chapter on fertility control for the ACOG publication Precis.  After her training, Dr. Dean worked as the Assistant Director of the Division of Family Planning at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Jacobi Medical Center while pursuing an MPH in Health Policy and Management at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.
 
Bronwyn E. S. Fitz, MD, Physician Director of Colposcoy Services
Dr. Bronwyn Fitz provides clinical services, oversees the cervical cancer-screening program, and participates in training residents and advanced practice clinicians.  She is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and is a member of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.   She graduated with Honors from Haverford College with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and received her medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.
 
Dr. Fitz completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Maryland Medical Systems in Baltimore, MD where she served as chief resident.  After her training she worked in private practice in Fishersville, VA.  From there Dr. Fitz joined the Planned Parenthood team in Charlottesville, VA where she served as Associate Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge.  Dr. Fitz also provides comprehensive clinical services and training at Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic.
  
Timothy Ryntz, MD, Associate Medical Director of Clinical Services
Dr. Timothy Ryntz is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and is a member of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, the National Abortion Federation and is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan, magna cum laude, and his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
 
Dr. Ryntz completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons where he received the Howard C. Taylor Jr award for Excellence in Resident Teaching. Prior to joining PPNYC, Dr. Ryntz was a gynecologist and interim medical director at Four Women in Attleboro Massachusetts, as well as a Harvard Medical School faculty obstetrician-gynecologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  He has lectured at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America medical directors conference, Planned Parenthood of New York City's advance practice clinicians seminar and Massachusetts General Hospital.  Dr. Ryntz is also a voluntary clinical instructor at the Mt. Sinai School of medicine.
