In a 5-4 Ruling today, the Supreme Court delivered a resounding victory for the health of New York’s women. Joan Malin President & CEO of PPNYC issued the following statement:

(New York, NY) – Today the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act meaning millions of women will now have access to birth control without a co-pay starting in August of this year. The Court’s ruling means women will have access to affordable, quality health care –many of whom had no coverage or inadequate coverage prior to the law’s passage.

This is an amazing victory for women’s health and for all Americans. One million currently uninsured New Yorkers will now gain insurance coverage, and hundreds of thousands of young adults will continue to have insurance coverage through their parent’s plans.  New York’s women will be able to have access to birth control later this summer without a co-pay.

For women, birth control isn’t a political or social issue –it’s basic health care and a real economic concern. Women, who come into our health centers here in New York, often struggle to decide whether to pay for birth control or pay for textbooks, groceries, or gas for the car. This decision protects a woman’s health, saves her money, and gives her control over whether and when to start a family.

We are pleased that the court left intact the critical reforms and benefits of the ACA which impact millions of women across America and right here in New York City.  The Affordable Care Act marks the biggest advance for women’s health in a generation. We thank the president for his leadership on this issue and all the members of Congress who voted to protect women’s health.
