OPINION COLUMN, “CORTE SUPREMA ABRIÓ LA PUERTA A INTRUSIÓN,” BY HAYDEE MORALES, PPNYC VICE PRESIDENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING AND MARGARET SANGER CENTER INTERNATIONAL, EL DIARIO (04/24/07)

Realmente el miércoles fue un día espantoso.  Cinco hombres -- dos de ellos escogidos por George W. Bush -- decidieron que ellos saben más sobre la salud de la mujer que los doctores. De una sola vez, la Corte Suprema deshizo 30 años de leyes establecidas y retrocedió lo avances en la salud para las mujeres.

Esta es una decisión muy importante para la salud y seguridad de las mujeres. Por primera vez, la Corte Suprema les dijo a las mujeres que cuando su salud esta a riesgo durante un embarazo, la decisión sobre que hacer ya no es de ella y de su doctor.

Este veredicto quiere decir que una Corte, que era independiente anteriormente, se unió con la administración del presidente Bush y se pusieron de acuerdo para que los políticos hagan las decisiones medicas para las mujeres y sus familias.

Esta decisión es un insulto absoluto hacia las mujeres.

Igual que todas las restricciones que limitan el acceso, es posible que esta prohibición afecte de una forma desproporcionada a las poblaciones minoritarias, mujeres de bajos recursos económicos y jóvenes que a menudo se encuentran forzados a demorar las decisiones sobre su salud reproductiva por falta de recursos económicos o por dificultad al navegar el sistema de salud.

Planned Parenthood, como proveedor de salud y defensor de los derechos reproductivos, sabe de primera mano, que las mujeres tienen abortos por muchas razones diferentes -- una mujer se da cuenta que su bebe tiene una anormalidad severa lo cual haría imposible que sobreviviera después de nacer; es posible que se de cuenta que su propia salud esta arriesgada peligrosamente y que esta a riesgo de ceguedad, inferilidad o un derrame si continua con el embarazo; es posible que tenga tres niños y sabe que el tener otro niño haría imposible que siga cuidando de su familia. Mientras que muchas personas no estén de acuerdo con estas razones, es mejor que cada quien pueda hacer su propia decisión.

Es igual de importante, que una vez ella haga su decisión, que ella sepa que su doctor le proveerá con el mejor cuidado medico que entre ellos determinen que es el mejor, sin que le aten las manos los políticos que no son doctores.

No se equivoque: Esta prohibición es parte de una agenda más grande para criminalizar el aborto.  Los intransigentes que querían esta prohibición no pararan hasta que se hayan prohibido los abortos completamente. Ahora que la Corte Suprema abrió la puerta a intrusión por parte del gobierno, cada político tiene que contestar la pregunta fundamental: ¿Cuando la salud de la mujer esta a riesgo, quien debe hacer la decisión sobre la salud que ella debe recibir -- la mujer y su doctor...o los políticos?

Como siempre, las prioridades más importantes de Planned Parenthood son la salud y la seguridad de nuestras pacientes.  Nuestras puertas permanecerán abiertas. Planned Parenthood esta proveyendo servicios de salud reproductiva - incluyendo el aborto legal y seguro - sin interrupción.

Estamos aquí hoy y estaremos aquí mañana. Estamos orgullosos de apoyar a las mujeres de la cuidad de Nueva York.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION: "THE SUPREME COURT OPENED THE DOOR FOR INTRUSION"

Wednesday was truly a shocking day.  Five men with a gavel -- two of whom were handpicked by George W. Bush -- decided that they know more about women's health than doctors.  In one fell swoop, the Supreme Court undid three decades of established law and turned back the clock on women's health.   

This is a pivotal ruling for women's health and safety. For the first time, the Supreme Court told women that, when their health is at risk during pregnancy, deciding what to do is no longer up to them and their doctors. 

What this verdict means is that a previously independent Court has joined the Bush administration and agreed to let politicians make medical decisions for women and their families. 

This ruling is an absolute insult to women.

Like all health care restrictions that limit access, this ban may disproportionately affect minorities, low-income women and teens who are often forced to delay reproductive health decisions due to lack of funds or difficulty navigating  the health care system.

As both health care providers and reproductive rights advocates, Planned Parenthood knows firsthand that women have abortions for many different reasons -- a woman may learn that her baby has a severe fetal anomaly that would make it impossible to survive once born; she may find out that her own health is dangerously compromised and that she risks blindness, infertility or stroke if she continues a pregnancy; she may have three children and know that another child would make it impossible to continue to care for her family.  While some of these reasons may not seem right to everyone, it is better that each person be able to make her own decision. 

And, as critically, once she makes the decision, she needs to know that her doctor will provide the medical care that she thinks is best without having her hands tied by politicians who do not have a medical degree.

Make no doubt about it: This ban is part of a larger agenda to criminalize abortion. The hardliners who pushed this ban won't stop until they've outlawed all abortions.  So now that the Supreme Court has opened the door to government intrusion, every politician has to answer this fundamental question:  When a woman's very health is at stake, whose role is it to decide about the health care she receives -- the woman and her physician... or politicians?

As always, Planned Parenthood's top priorities are the health and safety of our patients.   Our doors will remain open.  Planned Parenthood is providing reproductive health care service -- including safe and legal abortion -- without interruption.

We are here today and we will be here tomorrow. We are proud to stand with the women of New York City.
