Special Thanks to Curator Sponsor Toledo City Paper.
Planned Parenthood of Northwest Ohio‘s (PPNWO) third annual “The Art of Prevention” condom art show and fundraiser on Wednesday, September 7 drew 100 people to Space 237 Galleries downtown, and raised $10,000 to support local services and education programs.
Sixteen local artists competed in the juried competition, including BGSU and University of Toledo students and graduates, and community artists. Artists each received 250 condoms and had six weeks to create their piece.
The evening’s first place winner was Alex Beat, with an art installation that focused on promoting safe sex, winning a $250 cash prize. The second place winner was Suzanne Berg, who transformed condoms into yarn and knitted her piece; and Honorable Mention went to Kathy Hubert who created a stylish beach bag.
“‘Art of Prevention’ focuses on the need for prevention — 1 in 4 teen girls is infected with an STI and teen pregnancy rates are on the rise after declining for nearly two decades both locally and nationally,” said PPNWO CEO Lisa G. Perks
