Sexually Transmitted Infections Program



Standard
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of sexually transmitted infections and their impact on reproductive and sexual health.

Rationale
1 in 4 Americans will develop a sexually transmitted infection in their lifetime. Despite this fact, many Americans are largely unaware of their risk of infection. Through open discussion, based on accurate information about the scope of the problem, more people can become aware of the personal and public health implications of the current STI epidemic.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Sexually Transmitted Infection Education, participants will:

  • Identify behaviors that put a person at risk for sexually transmitted infections
  • Be able to identify the most common sexually transmitted infections and their symptoms
  • Identify the difference between curable and non-curable STIs
  • Understand their risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infections
  • Identify conditions and treatment options associated with each infection
  • Describe available testing procedures and where to access them
  • Describe prevention methods and risk reduction, including abstinence
  • Discuss options for communicating with a partner about STIs
